In our ever changing world, advances in technology and engineering remain a constant. One of the latest additions to the Prep to 12 curriculum is STEM or STEAM also known as Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.
What is STEAM?
STEAM is an educational approach to learning which encourages children to develop in their coding, construction and design skills. Many schools have added this as a specialist subject which gives students’ invaluable learning in preparation for a life full of the knowledge needed to thrive in the 21st century.
Benefits of STEAM
STEAM relies heavily on team work, problem solving and critical thinking. Children become confident in sharing innovative and creative ideas and develop a sense of enjoyment in the hands on learning that takes place. STEAM activities allow for step by step learning and reflection and they successfully foster the notion of safe risk taking in children.
Why STEAM?
A rise in the demand for STEAM related job opportunities has seen the rapid growth and need of a science, technology and engineering based focus within education.
Canterbury Toy Library sees the value of STEAM education and has recently purchased a range of STEAM resources including a coding robot for you to borrow and explore with your children. Many new toys geared towards STEAM are of growing interest and are being added to the toy library in the coming weeks.
